How much does 3D printing cost? What affects the price of a print
An overview of the factors that determine the price of custom 3D printing — part size, technology, material, number of parts and finishing.
The price of custom 3D printing can't be pinned to a single number — every part is different. The good news is that the price is made up of a few clear factors. Once you know them, you can both estimate and influence the price.
What the price of 3D printing is made up of
- Size and volume of the part — a larger part consumes more material and takes longer to print.
- Technology — FDM is more affordable, while SLS pays off for strong parts and series.
- Material — common plastics (PLA, PETG) are cheaper than engineering ones (nylon, ASA).
- Number of parts — for larger batches the price per part drops.
- Complexity and accuracy — complex geometries and tight tolerances raise the price.
- Finishing — sanding, painting or dyeing are charged separately.
How to reduce the cost of a print
- Choose a simpler material if the part has no special requirements.
- For functional prototypes you don't have to insist on 100% infill — often less is enough.
- For a larger number of parts, ask for a volume price.
- Design the part with the technology in mind — you'll avoid unnecessary supports.
Rough pricing
Simple small prototypes start at just a few euros per part. The exact price, however, always depends on the specific part, so we prefer to calculate it individually.
